Marple CC win comfortably during a cold day at Marple Sports Club. The side performed better than Didsbury 2As in every facet of the game, and it was one to forget for the away side.

That will go down as a classic first game back from a long break without cricket (for most of us). With a midday start in mind, only a handful of players had arrived by 11:30. Rehmani started the season how he spent most of last year, by losing the toss and being asked to field.

The pitch was rock-hard and outfield quick for an April match. Dids managed a very brief Sunil special warm-up which included not a lot of jogging and some stretching of muscles I forgot were there. It wasn’t the most prepared we have been for a match...

Opening the bowling was the skipper and Harri Aggarwal. A couple of clips to leg side to start things off, one of which was pouched by Zohaib off Harri. We’re on our way…

The following few overs were tight and uneventful, and Sunil got to turn his arm over (just), getting more and more horizontal with each ball in his over. Regardless, a good start for Dids.

A double change of spin comes into the attack at around 15 overs in. With not a lot of bowling available today, we needed a good 26 overs from Haris and Bells to get through the overs and keep things tight on what was a big turning wicket. Ah…

A few sixes, plenty of fours and sore hands later, and Marple had picked up the momentum. They were firmly in control, with Massey shifting from 1st and 6th gear pretty sharpish, but then chipped a ball to mid-off that I can’t really describe by Bells, and while on 49. But I t worked, and it was a lifeline!

After the drinks break, the 2As continued with spin at both ends and Marple built another partnership. Barrow passed 50 and took control as the pair made 84 for the third wicket. Haris earned his first wicket of the game, with Barrow dismissed edging to slip for a well made 85, quickly followed by his second in Wild, who was caught superbly by young Lancashire wicketkeeper, Ibrahim Faisal. Two new batsmen, and the seamers are back on for Dids.

Stand out bowler for the 2As was comfortably Harri Aggarwal. His first spell with the new ball included the breakthrough, but his second spell was superb. With Marple going at almost five an hour, he tied up one end, taking the wicket of Lloyd in the process. Great work, having also impressed away at Marple last year for the 2As.

The last 20 overs were very cold, hard hands, a few drops in the field, lots of misfielding and switching off. It was a very frustrating and lacklustre display for a side that finished third last year. Marple made 246 on a decent deck and a fairly quick outfield. Who knows. Onto the batting..

Rehmani described it as a solid start from Dids…

Tom Beresford opened up with Shabih Shah, with seamers at both ends. In short, Extras batted very well in the 33-run opening partnership which came off almost 15 overs. Beresford struggled to find bat on ball on 4, a pretty great advert on why you should turn up to winter nets, as Shabih was eventually trapped LBW for 16. Marple bowled reasonably well up top, disciplined and with a ring field but there was a lack of urgency from both openers. 

Sean Reilly and Zohaib Ahmad came in and seemed to try to give the innings some impetus but fell cheaply, with the score on 46 (Beresford on just 10 at this point - as I’m writing this, I’m sure I hit four 4s in this innings but hey ho). Sunil Singh comes to the crease with the team in trouble. Behind the rate and needing a partnership. The pair put on 21 before Beresford was trademark bowled trying to drive a medium-pacer.

Having started slowly, Sunil then picked up the pace. He was joined by Ibraheem Khan, and started hitting the seam/spin combo to all parts, including a huge six overs long-on and some beautiful drives over cover. He probably showed how to bat on this surface. Lots of value on following through and just about beating the infield. And it showed.. Marple spread the field and it was noticeably quieter in the field for the next few overs. Didsbury went past 100 at around the time of drinks, so needing around 6 an over from here.

Ibraheem, who stuck in there with just the one run in the 35-run partnership, was gone LBW by captain Hirst, who eventually took five wickets. Haaris joined Sunil for an enjoyable 28-run partnership, before being dismissed. We were getting there, bit by bit, but losing too many wickets, now six down at the halfway point. Sunil passed 50, with another boundary, before being caught at long-off for 61 off just 55 balls (ten 4s, one 6s). Judging by the celebration for that wicket, Maple were very relieved. Another five overs of this could have got us to the 200 mark and game on!

Harri and young Ibrahim batted very well at the end, both making double figures and hitting a few boundaries, but it wasn’t to be. Didsbury 2As were bowled out for 167, three short of another batting point disappointingly.

All in all, a very poor performance. Marple were the better side all-round and deserved the win.

Looking at the results in the league, 167 is respectable but not good enough if we are to try and win the league this year. It took us 8/9 games to get going last year. Bowden at Mere next week, who were relegated from the Prem and bowled out Grappenhall for 35 in their first game, so we’ll need to be a lot better to get back to winning ways.

Dids MOTM - Sunil Singh, excellent innings and bowled well too when asked, picking up a wicket.
